MS Progressive Types: Primary Progressive and Progressive Relapsing

In the series of articles on Progressive MS for MS Central section of Health Central, the second one talks about Primary Progressive and Progressive Relapsing. It was published May 20. Here it is --

MS Types – Primary Progressive and Progressive Relapsing

Let's continue looking at characteristics of Progressive MS. I already talked about the different types of MS and focused specifically on Secondary Progressive. As this series continues, I will discuss research and clinical trials, medications, "a day in the life," and other topics relating to the progressive types of MS. Today the focus is on Primary Progressive and Progressive/Relapsing MS.

Remember, most MSers have Relapsing/Remitting MS (55-85%). Only a small minority of MSers have Primary Progressive (10-15%) and Progressive/Relapsing MS (2-5%). There is an information void for these types. That information can be confusing to the patients, and maybe even to the doctors who see so few cases compared to the other types.

Same Symptoms = Same Treatment?

If you find someone with similar or even the same symptoms, that doesn't mean the same treatment will work for both of you. Now, we may know why that is true.

Researchers at the University of Michigan tell us that even people with the very same symptoms may have different forms of the disease. In an article published in the latest Journal of Experimental Medicine they tell us they injected mice with different forms of the disease, but they developed the same symptoms.

So far it's just mice, but this research thread may lead to customized treatments in the future based on your particular MS subtype.

Garry's Blog asked the question, "Who could hate the disabled?" Well apparently someone does.

Garry uses data visualization to show patterns of hate crimes against people with disabilities. He used FBI data broken down by type of crime. Take a look.

MSers at Risk

We have known for some time that MS and osteoporosis have a relationship. I have written about it before, and now I have found even more information.

A Health Care Industry article emphasizes it is common for MSers to have low bone mass density. Limited physical activity and steroids, frequently associated with MS, aggravate the risk.

Doctors Bowling and House wrote an
article on Disaboom of hidden conditions such as osteoporosis when coupled with MS. The problem is not only that MSers are vulnerable, but that health care professionals often overlook it.

These are good reading. The articles remind us it is vital to be aware of the possibility of osteoporosis with MS, regardless of age or gender. Don't just wonder if you need a bone density test, ask your doctor. It is important!
